Each year eight million children die before their 5th birthday.
Three million of these deaths occur in the first 28 days and there is nothing more saddening than to watch helplessly as a new born babies life ends before it had had a chance at life. It doesn’t have to be this way. Many of these deaths are preventable if babies are placed in the safety and warmth of a neonatal incubator.
A person with lower limb disability may have to use a wheel chair for the entire life. In a conventional wheelchair the user spends time in a seated position all the time. This constraint gives rise to many physical as well as mental health related issues such as sore body, building of pressure points leading to pressure sores, lowered blood circulation, and dependence on other people for basic needs. One solution to this problem is to provide mechanisms in the wheel-chair to assist the person to stand.
Refreshable Braille Display (RBD) is a device that enables people with visually impairment to read digital text through tactile interface. Textual content in Portable Document Format (PDF), word documents etc. can be read using the display without having to emboss/print on braille paper.
Free from the demerits of both auditory devices and paper-embossed braille and at a price point below one-seventh of that of commercially available displays, RBD has been developed deeper penetration in both developed and developing countries.
In Aug 2015 Phoenix signed agreement with Medicine Mondiale to manufacture low cost Incubator, The Life Pod .

The Problem

The problem is that High Tec lifesaving incubators are expensive, and require essential expensive on-going servicing and maintenance to keep them working. These incubators are not designed to work in the challenging developing world Hospital so they break down often.
The average lifespan of an infant incubator in a Hospital in Africa is less than eighteen months. Once an incubator fails it is pushed into a corner and forgotten.
When Incubators die, children die, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
The Solution
The Mondiale Life Pod incubator is designed to be indestructible, purifies its own air and water, and run for ten years, saving up to 500 little lives for a fraction of the price of existing incubators. Costs only $2,000 and will run continuously without the need for replacement parts or maintenance by trained technicians.
Using lean design and manufacturing principles and state of the art materials of construction the Lifepod incubator is lifecycle tested to 100,000 hours continuous running and does not need servicing by trained technicians.
The Patented Mondiale humidification system prevents the propagation of pathogenic bacteria within the incubator.
Phoenix Medical Systems expects a two-fold growth when it manufactures and distributes Life Pod to the whole world.

When Sashikumar saw the prototype in the Rehabilitation Research and Device Development Lab (R2D2) at IIT-Madras, he decided to take up its development. Phoenix’s expertise in affordable manufacturing is crucial to making the price point of the SWC comparable to that of a good quality manual wheelchair.
This is possible also because Wellcome Trust’s grant, aimed at creating a social impact, covers the cost of all the initial equipment required to manufacture the wheelchair.
The proto versions are currently been put through user trials and refined based on feedback.
